A new heating system in just three days
A heat pump to prepare the old building for the new generation
A 90-year-old settler's house with a family history – Heiko Röder inherited his grandparents' house and has since renovated it to make it energy-efficient and sustainable. The centrepiece was the new heating system from Dimplex.
Sustainable energy supply in a semi-detached house: Heiko Röder relies on heat pumps and photovoltaics
Since 2020, Heiko Röder and his family have been gradually converting their semi-detached house to a sustainable energy supply. The aim is to supply the house with energy in an environmentally friendly and cost-saving way. In the first phase of construction, a Dimplex heat pump for heating and domestic hot water was installed, which already supplies the 120 m² living space of Heiko Röder's father. In addition, the old windows were replaced with modern, double-glazed windows, and a photovoltaic system now supplies free electricity for both semi-detached houses.
The Röder couple live in a space of 100 m². When the old gas heating needed replacing two years ago, the Röders opted for an environmentally friendly alternative to reduce their heating costs and CO2 emissions.
In March 2022, the second phase of construction began on Heiko and Heidi Röder's semi-detached house. The family's 100 m² living unit needed a new heating system to heat the rooms efficiently and sustainably. Apart from replacing the windows, no further changes were made to the building fabric or interior design – the Röders continue to rely on classic radiators as their heat source.
‘Sustainability and energy efficiency are particularly important to us when it comes to heating. It was therefore quickly clear to us that we would rely on heat pump technology,’ explains Heiko Röder. With the Dimplex heat pump System E, they chose a model that was specially developed for the renovation of existing buildings. The heat pump is able to deliver a higher flow temperature, which is required for the operation of classic radiators, and thus ensures an efficient and environmentally friendly heat supply.
Dimplex System E heat pump: efficient solution for high flow temperatures
To ensure the required flow temperature of 55°C while maintaining a good energy balance, the Röder family opted for the Dimplex System E heat pump system. This heat pump is characterised by its high efficiency even at higher flow temperatures and works particularly quietly. The device could also be installed in a space-saving way in the garden in front of the house wall, without losing valuable space inside the house.
The Dimplex System E offers a reliable and sustainable solution for heating systems in old buildings and ensures an environmentally friendly heat supply that optimises energy consumption.
“We expected to see improvements in terms of energy consumption and costs, but we were still surprised by these great results! The new heat pump has more than paid for itself.”

Replace the heating system in just three days: efficient installation of a new heat pump
Replacing the heating system in Heiko Röder's semi-detached house was quick and easy. According to Röder, the effort required to install the new heating system was minimal. Only two core drill holes through the house wall were needed to feed the pipes (supply and heating return lines, as well as electric wires) to the rear of the building.
Inside the house, the old gas heating system was replaced by a modern circulation pump, the pipework in the boiler room was updated and a new 200-litre buffer tank was connected. A separate fuse box was installed for the electrical connection. The new heating system was commissioned using the Easy On system on the WPM Touch and was completed in just five hours, including the electrical work. The complete replacement of the heating system in the semi-detached house was completed in a record-breaking three days.
‘The commissioning of the heat pump, including the electrical work, took only five hours, and the entire heating replacement was completed within three days,’ says Heiko Röder proudly.
Highly efficient heat pump for old buildings: Röders achieve top marks for energy efficiency
Despite the challenging conditions of a barely renovated old building without underfloor heating, the Röder family's heat pump achieves impressive efficiency values. Thanks to a targeted optimisation of the controller settings, the flow temperature could be gradually reduced, resulting in an outstanding seasonal performance factor of almost 4.5. This means that for each unit of energy used, the heat pump produces an average of 4.5 units of heat – an excellent value for a heating system in an old building without modern heating systems such as underfloor heating.
With this highly efficient heat pump, the Röder family is relying on a sustainable solution that not only lowers heating costs but also significantly reduces CO2 emissions.
